December 23, 2024 - Professor Wang Guozhen from the University of Liverpool was invited to visit the Myology Laboratory. As a pioneering scholar in Fu's Subcutaneous Needling (FSN) in Europe, Professor Wang has been committed to promoting the international development and scientific mechanism research of FSN therapy since systematically studying it in 2015.

A core member of the European FSN Association, Professor Wang delivered an influential lecture titled "Trinity Discussion of FSN: Exploring the Mechanisms and Biomedical Principles of Fu's Subcutaneous Needling Therapy" on May 17, 2018 (published on the European FSN Association's official account). In this lecture, he established profound connections between FSN's mechanisms and biomedical theories, providing significant insights for myological research in FSN.

1. Exchange Content

Professor Wang expressed high appreciation for the establishment of the Myology Laboratory and proposed three forward-looking suggestions for current research directions:

  • Immune-Neuro-Muscular System Interaction Mechanisms: Focus on the regulatory role of dendritic cells in the inflammatory microenvironment of muscles.

  • Activation Mechanisms of Nerve Terminal Receptors: Investigate the regulatory effects of Fu's Subcutaneous Needling stimulation on mechanosensitive ion channels in sensory nerve terminals.

  • Cross-Muscle Group Signal Integration Network: Analyze the signaling synergy mechanisms among skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscles, particularly the dynamic relationship between calcium signaling and metabolic pathways.

2. Scientific Spirit and Discipline Development

Professor Wang emphasized that myology research faces the challenge of achieving "ground-zero theoretical breakthroughs," which must be supported by three core convictions:

  • Theoretical Confidence: Build a distinctive myological framework rooted in the clinical efficacy of Fu's Subcutaneous Needling (FSN).

  • Technological Confidence: Integrate multidisciplinary approaches encompassing molecular biology, biomechanics, and beyond.

  • Cultural Confidence: Advance the modernization of traditional Chinese medicine and strengthen its voice in international academia.

He encouraged researchers to "set sail with the dream of FSN and paddle with evidence-based research," pioneering new chapters of disciplinary development amid the tides of our times.

Appendix: Profile of Professor Wang Guozhen

Professor Wang Guozhen is a Chair Professor and Doctoral Supervisor at the University of Liverpool, UK. A recipient of research grants from the Chinese National Education Commission and the Henry Fok Education Foundation, he has dedicated 32 years to biomedical research at the University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, and University of Liverpool.

Over the past two decades, his work has focused on fundamental and clinical studies of critical illnesses, particularly sepsis. His research specifically examines how histones released during severe cellular damage activate neutrophils to form neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), leading to acute lung injury and myocardial injury.

Professor Wang serves as an Editor for Frontiers in Immunology and as a reviewer for prestigious journals including CellCritical Care Medicine (CCM)BloodBritish Journal of Haematology (BJH), and BBA Gastroenterology and Hepatology. His publications appear in top-tier international journals such as Blood (IF 25.7), American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine (AJRCCM) (IF 30.53), and JAMA (IF 120.7).

A licensed practitioner of Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture, Professor Wang holds unique insights into and a particular affinity for Fu's Subcutaneous Needling (FSN). He is a Senior Member of the Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine (ATCM) in the UK.
